Today, we’re delving into the realm of weight loss medications, exploring the options available, and shedding light on their benefits and considerations. Weight loss can be a challenging journey, and for some individuals, medications can be a helpful tool when combined with lifestyle changes. Let’s take a closer look at some of the weight loss medications you might encounter:
Prescription Weight Loss Medications:
- Zepbound or Tirzepatide:
This medication is known for its effectiveness in promoting substantial weight loss by activating 2 hormone receptors, GLP-1 and GIP. It works by increasing feelings of fullness and reducing hunger. Zepbound is administered via a weekly injection. - Wegovy or Semaglutide:
This medication is known for its effectiveness in promoting substantial weight loss by activating 1 hormone receptor, GLP-1. It works by increasing feelings of fullness and reducing hunger. Wegovy can be administered via a weekly injection (or a daily tablet – see below). - Saxenda or Liraglutide:
Similar to Wegovy, but Saxenda is a daily injectable medication that works by decreasing hunger and increasing fullness. Due to the greater effectiveness and weekly dosing regimen of both Zepbound and Wegovy (injections), Saxenda is less commonly used. - Foundayo or Orforglipron:
This is also a GLP-1 receptor agonist, but Foundayo comes in oral, tablet form. It is taken daily and produces significant weight loss, but on-average not as much as Zepbound or injectable Wegovy. This could be a good option for those with a fear of needles or smaller weight loss goals. - Oral Wegovy or Semaglutide:
This is another GLP-1 receptor agonist, but Wegovy also comes in oral, tablet form. It is taken daily and produces significant weight loss, but on-average not as much as Zepbound or injectable Wegovy. This could be a good option for those with a fear of needles or smaller weight loss goals. - Phentermine:
Phentermine is an appetite suppressant often prescribed for weight loss, and it is taken orally. - Qsymia or Phentermine/Topiramate:
This combination oral medication addresses both appetite control and cravings, making it easier to manage food intake. - Contrave or Bupropion/Naltrexone:
Contrave is taken orally and combines two medications to reduce appetite, cravings, and possibly even emotional hunger.
Type 2 Diabetes Medications with Weight Loss Benefits:
Some medications used to manage type 2 diabetes can also have a positive effect on weight:
- Mounjaro or Tirzepatide: While primarily used for diabetes management, Mounjaro also supports weight loss. It is a weekly injectable medication.
- Ozempic or Semaglutide: Like Mounjaro, Ozempic is used to manage diabetes but can also lead to weight loss. It is the same as Wegovy, but with a different name. It is also administered by weekly injection.
- Glucophage or Metformin: While also primarily used for diabetes, metformin is an oral medication that may support weight loss efforts by improving insulin sensitivity and decreasing blood glucose, appetite, and body fat.
The development of more effective weight loss medications is not showing signs of slowing down, as there are more coming our way over the next several years. This is exciting, because we will have more options than ever before. Some of these medications will have additional, slightly different, or completely new mechanisms of action. Please remember that these medications are typically prescribed under the guidance of a healthcare professional, and they may not be suitable for everyone. Factors like your medical history, current medications, and individual health goals play a significant role in determining the right choice.
Weight loss medications should always be combined with a comprehensive approach to health, including a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and behavior modifications, especially in the area of sleep hygiene and stress management. They are not a quick fix but can provide valuable support on your weight loss journey. Consult with your healthcare provider to discuss your options, potential side effects, and a personalized weight loss plan that aligns with your needs and goals. Your path to a healthier you begins with informed choices and professional guidance.
